There’s a good reason the old saying, “You are what you eat” exists. Every bite of food you take has an impact on your body and your brain, but did you know that the way you eat matters, too? With that logic, switching up the phrase to, “You are how you eat” is just as applicable.
Today, we’re going to take a look at the concept of mindful eating. You’ll learn how to eat with intention and develop a more appreciative attitude toward the food that fuels you.
What is mindful eating?
Mindfulness is an awareness technique that helps you recognize and deal with emotions, physical sensations, and other aspects of daily living. It brings your attention back to whatever you’re experiencing at that moment.
At its core, mindful eating means using mindfulness as a gateway to giving the experience of eating your full attention. When you eat mindfully, you might:
- Eat slowly, chewing each bite for longer than you normally might
- Turn off the TV, put down the phone, and focus solely on your meal.
- Pay attention to physical hunger cues, and differentiate them from how you eat when you aren’t really hungry.
- Eat only until you’re satiated, not stuffed.
- Pay attention to how your food looks, smells, feels, sounds, and tastes.
- Keeping track of how the foods you eat impact your emotional state.
- Learn how to deal with any food-based guilt or anxiety.
When you do these things, eating becomes a much more purposeful process.
How to eat more mindfully
The next time you grab a snack or sit down for a meal, try some of these techniques. Each one will help you connect to the process of eating, which in turn allows you to better understand how food affects your physical and mental state.
Consider the lifecycle of your food
Do you know where your food comes from, or how it gets to your plate? In modern society, most of us are fairly disconnected from the food we eat every day. When you think about all of the people, places, and processes that went into your food, it’s much easier to feel gratitude for the experience.
Sit at a table (not your desk)
We’re all guilty of eating lunch at our desks while typing away, but try something revolutionary: sitting down for a meal at a table meant for dining. Without any distractions, you’ll have an easier time focusing on what and how you’re eating.
Chew 20+ times
The exact number you choose isn’t important, but the idea is to slow down. This trick is especially helpful for anyone who tends to eat quickly.
Put all distractions away
When was the last time you ate a meal without watching our reading something? If it’s been a while, try eating in silence.
Close your eyes for the first bite
When you close your eyes, you can give your full attention to the bite of food you’re enjoying. Focus on how the flavors mix together, what the texture feels like, and take a moment to fully appreciate the experience.
