Mindfulness Tips to Help You Live in the Moment

When life bombards you with responsibilities that leave you feeling stressed, anxious, and high-strung, mindfulness can help.

A lot of mindfulness advice centers around meditation, but we’re going to leave that one off the list this time. Sometimes you just need avoid being anxious with something a quicker than a 30-minute meditation session, and these quick and easy alternatives will be your go-tos.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is simply, “the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.”

It’s a simple concept, but actually practicing mindfulness can be a tough mental challenge. Luckily, being mindful is similar to any other skill: it all comes down to practice. When you realize that your day feels anxious and you could benefit from some more awareness, use these 5 techniques to bring your mind back into the moment.

1. Breathe deeply

This one sounds simple, but when was the last time you stopped to focus only on your breath? Beat feelings of anxiousness by taking 10 deep breaths in a row. It can be helpful to repeat a short mantra to yourself while you do this — “I’m breathing in” and “I’m breathing out” are two simple and effective phrases to try.

2. Scan your body

From the top of your head down to your toes, how does your body feel? ‘Scan’ for any feelings of tension, tightness, and discomfort. Then, reverse things and scan for pleasant sensations and feelings of comfort.

You can also do this while breathing deeply, sort of like a mini-mediation.

3. Take a quick break to stare out the window

This tip isn’t an excuse to let your brain wander into daydream mode. Instead, take note of everything you see and hear. What color is the sky? Are the leaves rustling in the wind? Can you hear birds, traffic, or other noises? Simply observe the world and what’s going on around you, coming back to the view whenever your mind wanders.

4. Listen mindfully

If silence feels deafening to you, try putting some music on. Focus on the sounds for a short period or an entire sound. Try not to think about how it makes you feel or what the music reminds you of. If lyrics are too distracting, try some instrumental tunes.

5. Have a mindful snack
